Arachne
Arachne is a game in which the player has to get from one point to another.
The player can draw on pre-existent webs in the levels, cut webs and slingshot to traverse themselves through the stages.
We had the assignment to create a game on this mythical being, I wanted to make something for the Wii U after the previous experiment so I convinced the team.
When designing this I wanted to make use of the touchscreen again, Dimitiri and I quickly came to the idea of drawing something.
Considering we had a myth about a spider person, we thought it might be cool to draw webs and climb on them.
As a fan of 2d platformers I started working on some level concepts.
We however quickly noticed that mistakes were kind of inevitble, so we decided you could cut away webs.
After the drawing was implemented, we tought it could be cool to launch yourself with them. And it was rather simple to implement too by using physics!
However I noticed that players were struggling with drawing while in the air, I suggested a slomotion effect while soaring through the skies.
I feel like we could've done better with differentiating the TV and GamePad screen as from playtests users mainly looked at the gamepad.
What I tried was to give the players a zoomed out view on the TV so they could see the full stage and drops, but it didn't change a lot.
Overall it was a very interesting projects, we ran into a lot of bugs and strange edgecases that only happened on console.
